Gospel Music

Once confined to the churches, Gospel music has now gone almost completely mainstream, and thanks to the efforts of stars like Amy Grant and Kirk Franklin, experts say faith-based music will become even more popular as the new millennium progresses.

“Like the blues, gospel will become part of the fabric of American music and will become synonymous with American music,” says scholar and performer Horace Clarence Boyer. “It will be heard in elevators, over telephones, in department stores, movies and commercials.”

Symphony of love

Deaf Symphony is the brainchild of Matt Cerbin. Back in June of 2005, I had my introduction to his project Black Garden. I was impressed with the recording and recently I received the most recent effort Chains of Love. The workload is shared this time around so Cerbin can concentrate more on playing the guitar, bass, and keyboards and not have to be concerned with the lead singing as well. It looks like there is an official lineup now. Larry Cox is back playing his drums and you can hear him loud and clear. The way he plays really sets the standard for everyone else to follow. There is another guitar player in the mix now too, Howard Askeland. He holds his own and does a nice job trading licks with Cerbin.

Alternative Music

The evolution of music has brought forth hundreds of music variations in so many forms to the basic music categories. This diversity in music forms have categorized in alternative music those ish style music that come as slight style alterations to most popular music forms (i.e. alternative rock or rock-ish music for rock music that does not really fit into the mainstream genres of a particular time period).

Alternative music is a category coined as a sort of catch-all for those sub-genres that are unclassified but can be traced with similarities to popular genres. These alternative music are usually those that were not released commercially and are recorded on independent labels. Some music from this category, from word of mouth, would soon find its way into the mainstream and become commercially successful.

Besides the fact that listening to instrumental music composed for the flute, piano, guitar, violin and other instruments is incredibly enjoyable, practitioners have found that it can also have a tremendously positive impact on the mind, body and spirit.

Of late, the affect of instrumental songs on physical health and well-being has been particularly touted. “More and more doctors are now using music as part of their patients treatment to help them stay healthy and to recover more quickly from illness,” says Victoria Abreo, an alternative medicine specialist at BellaOnline. “Heart patients gained the same benefits from listening to 30 minutes of classical music as they did from taking 10 mg of the anti-anxiety medication Valium. Music and relaxation therapy have been used together to lower heart rate and blood pressure in patients with heart disease. Migraine sufferers were trained to use music, guided imagery, and relaxation technique to help reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of their headaches.”
